How to make Yahoo! Messenger (Y!M) work using HTTP Proxy with authentication

It happen after i upgrade my Y!M to version 8. Try putting in username and password, then pressing login button … Y!M will show signing in animation, smiley jumping up and down, on and on … then it got tired and show the login screen again.

I’m almost giving up but i lucked out to found this trick working for me. In my case i was using HTTP proxy with authentication. I thought it’s the one which caused the problem.

Here’s the step by step to make Y!M work with HTTP proxy:

  1. First set up your Internet Explorer proxy setting.
  2. Open up your Y!M. Click on “Messenger” menu and “Connection Preferences”. Click “Use proxies” then tick on “Enable HTTP proxy”. Fill in server name and server port.
  3. Click on “Get a new Yahoo! ID…”. Wait for a sec then it will pop up a proxy authentication dialog. Fill in your username and password, press “OK”. After that it’ll show “Yahoo! ID Information” dialog. Just press the “Cancel” button and confirm your action by clicking “Yes”.
  4. Back to main Y!M login page. Fill in your Yahoo! ID and Password, press “Sign In”.
  5. Wait for a while for signing in process. Then … voila, Y!M will show your roster list. Here you go … start chatting with dignity :)

If it doesn’t work, try to wash your hand before repeating step 4. Still doesn’t work? Wash again your hand, restart the computer and repeat from step 1. If it’s not working after hundreds trial, just give up. Try Gaim, other commercial IM or Meebo for your last resort.

    Hi,

To fully utilize Yahoo! Messenger Voice Server these TCP ports must be opened:
    - 80 —> http
    - 443 —> secured http
    - 5061

As for Webcam and Video services you should add this to your firewall:

    Protocol: TCP
    Server: webcam.yahoo.com
    Port: 5100

The problem is, when we connect to these services behind proxy, it is almost impossible. There are tricks to use hoppers / proxify, but this would tremendeously slow down your connection and really not a suitable solution.

In other words, with a proxy we cannot have voice nor video/cam.
    Sorry.

    Hope this helps.

I use the exact same method with YM9.
    I works.

Another solution is just use the web based messenger client such as meebo.
